What Happens in Zoos

Everyday, millions of people around the world visit zoos every year. However, many people are blindsided from the fact that these animals behind the cages are suffering greatly. The animals are taken from their homes and are forced to live in artificial environments that immitate their actual homes. The animals in zoos are neglected of their basic needs and they can eventually become mentally insane, or also known as zoochosis. Animals that experience zoochosis usually are pacing back and forth, swaying, or even vomiting.

What Happens in Circuses

Animals are taken from their homes and forced to travel across the world in tight enclosures. Animals who are in the circus industry spend 96 percent of their lives chained up and caged. The circus cramps the animals in dirty, inhumane cages and then force them to do insane tricks and if not done properly, the animals are tremendously mistreated and beaten. The animals are whipped, poked, chained, and even hit to the point where it affects them both physically and mentally. Their daily lives in the circus is full of stress, pain and boredom.

What Happens in Marine Parks

Animals, like orcas and dolphins, that are being used in marine parks such as SeaWorld are taken from the wild, separated from their parents and are stuffed in 20 feet wide x 30 feet deep tanks. A full size orca can grow to be at least 23 feet long, so being put in these tanks causes them to become immobile. If you ever saw the famous Shamu perform at a SeaWorld, then you see how fun and excited it looks; however, that’s not the case for the whales. Training for these shows are brutal for these animals. For instance, the orcas are neglected, put in isolation for days, and raked by actual teeth that breaks the skin, which causes the whales to bleed. So you see, the daily life of the whales isn’t so fun and exciting after all.

What Can WE Do To Help

In order to help end using animals for entertainment it must start with you guys. You can visit animal sanctuaries rather than going to places like marine parks, circuses, and zoos. Another way to help is to voice your opinion on things. For instance, you can do this by writing letters to local newspapers, boycott the businesses that support animal cruelty and join animal advocacy groups. One last thing is to avoid watching movies or tv shows that use real animals in their productions.
